Every year, the Hawaii Department of Education publishes a School Status and Improvement Report which gives a description of each school and offers a snapshot of a school's standing compared to state averages. Although Kalama remains a school in "Continuous Improvement", for the 2015-16 year, our 8th graders continued to test above state averages in science proficiency. In addition, Our 7th graders made up significant ground in literacy proficiency and 8th graders showed significant improvement in their math proficiency.
Our Mission is to ensure that each student develops the four core values (Honesty, Cooperation, Respect, and Responsibility). These values are part of a greater Positive Behavior and Instructional Support system designed to help establish a foundation of character, which they will need to be contributing members of the global community.
Hawai‘i’s school accountability and improvement system
How do you measure how well a school is doing? In our estimation, it's about more than scores on high-stakes tests. Schools should demonstrate that they're supporting all children along the educational pipeline toward college, career and community readiness. Are they attending school? Are they graduating? Are they going to college? Students should be able to demonstrate proficiency, but are they also showing growth? And how successfully are schools reducing the achievement gap between high-needs and non-high-needs students?
The Strive HI Performance System was designed to account for all these factors in student success. For more Strive HI information, please click here.
